Bleeding gums can be a common occurrence when brushing or flossing and can often go as quickly as they appeared. However, in some cases, bleeding gums can be a warning sign for other, possibly more serious issues. Here, we take a look at some key things to look out for when brushing.
Ideally, healthy gums should be pink, firm and keep your teeth securely in place. If you find you are bleeding from the gums regularly then it’s definitely time for a check-up.
Here are some of the most common causes of bleeding gums:
• Gingivitis, a disease that causes inflammation of the gums
• Brushing too hard or your toothbrush isn’t soft enough
• Vitamin deficiencies such s Vitamin C or Vitamin K
• A new flossing routine, and using dental floss too roughly
• Taking medicines, such as aspirin, blood thinners, or ibuprofen
• Have dentures that don’t fit well
• Faulty dental restorations
There are some things you can do to treat the problem at home that could help tackle the issue easily. However, you should make an appointment with your dentist if your gums are painful, swollen, or bleed when you brush.
Antibacterial mouthwashes can both treat and prevent gum problems. They kill bacteria and reduce inflammation to soothe sore, swollen, and bleeding gums.
It might sound like an old wives’ tale, but it’s stood the test of time for reducing bacteria and speed up healing times.
For sensitive gums, choose an extra soft toothbrush as firm or medium toothbrushes are too rough on sensitive gums. It’s also important to replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months, or sooner if the bristles look frayed.
You should make an appointment to see your dentist if you think you may have gum problems. If you do not currently have a dentist contact Newmarket Road Dental Practice today.< Back to the Blog
