How does oral health relate to your overall health?

April 9 2021

Research has shown that your overall health and dental health are connected. The health of your mouth can reflect the health of your body and wellbeing. However, oral health is much more than just healthy teeth. It also includes the health of many other structures such as the gums, bones, muscles, ligaments, glands, and nerves. This can lead to health issues that can affect both self-image and sense of wellbeing.

How are oral health and overall health connected?

Overall health and oral health can be linked to illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease, osteoporosis, and rheumatoid arthritis. The mouth really is the window to the body, and it can quickly show signs of nutritional deficiencies or infection. This can affect the entire body and may only become apparent because of oral problems. Bacteria can build up on teeth make gums prone to infection. Then, the immune system moves in to attack the infection and the gums become inflamed. The inflammation continues unless the infection is brought under control. If left untreated, inflammation and the chemicals it releases can eat away at the gums and bone structure that hold teeth in place. The result is severe gum disease, known as periodontitis. This type of inflammation can also cause problems in the rest of the body.

Warning signs

It’s important to tell your dentist about changes in your overall health, particularly any recent illnesses or chronic conditions. There are some key things to look out for in your general oral health, and if you notice any of these signs, book to see your dentist:

  • Gums that bleed during brushing and flossing
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Gums that have pulled away from your teeth
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
  • Change in the fit of partial dentures.
