Why do I need a tooth extraction?
Certain dental conditions may necessitate a tooth extraction, such as:
- A late-stage dental pulp infection
- A tooth that has broken off within the gum line
- An impacted wisdom tooth
- Overcrowding of two or more teeth
What should I expect during a tooth extraction?
Before extracting your tooth, local anaesthesia will be applied to the affected area, so you do not feel any discomfort during the procedure.
During the extraction, your dentist will loosen the tooth and gently remove it using a pair of forceps. You may feel slight pressure during the process but shouldn’t feel any discomfort.
Sometimes when the tooth is too embedded to extract with forceps, it is necessary to make a small surgical incision in your gums to access the tooth. This type of extraction is known as “surgical extraction.”
Surgical extraction may also be required for wisdom teeth that have not fully emerged from underneath the gum.
After extraction, your dentist will clean the wound and if necessary, stitch the site closed.
How will I feel after a tooth extraction?
The local anaesthesia should begin wearing off within a few hours.
Any discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter medication. If you had a surgical extraction, your dentist might give you prescription medication.
Don’t smoke or drink using a straw for the next few days, to avoid dislodging the blood clot and reopening the wound.
