Veneers – what problems can they fix?

Veneers not only improve the appearance of your teeth, but they also give a brighter and more even smile. Dental veneers are often used to treat broken or chipped teeth and severe discoloration that can’t be fixed with whitening. They can also help to fix gaps between teeth, uneven teeth, or teeth that are irregularly shaped.

How do veneers work?

The procedure for dental veneers usually requires around three visits. The first one is for a consultation and then a further two for creation and application. One tooth or multiple teeth can be treated at the same time. They only cover only the front surface of the tooth, so they can mimic the size, shape, and colour of your natural teeth.

The procedure

When being fitted for veneers we will remove about half a millimetre of enamel from the surface of your teeth. This is so they bond correctly and to allow for the added layer of the veneer. Then, an impression is taken using our state-of-the-art 3Shape TRIOS Scanner so your bespoke veneers can be created. Although they are long lasting, they are not considered permanent since they will likely have to be replaced at some point. However, they can last for decades as long as you take care of them properly. Some patients may never need to replace them at all.

Aftercare

Around a week after fitting, we will schedule a follow up appointment. This is to check and polish the veneers but also to make sure you are happy with the result. At this point, we advise to wait before considering any minor adjustments as it can take a little time to get used to your new teeth. However, if you would like any changes these can be discussed at your appointment.

How long will they last?

If looked after, they can last up to 10-15 years on average. However, good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups can extend the lifespan of your veneers. If you grind your teeth at night, we can provide you with a mouthguard to help protect your teeth while you sleep.
