When you experience one or more missing teeth, it can make you feel self-conscious and create problems when you are chewing and speaking.

Tooth loss can also create other issues such as increasing the risk of infection in the exposed gums and loss of bone tissue in your jaw.

When you lose a tooth either through injury or extraction, book an appointment with your dentist to discuss your options for tooth replacement. At The Newmarket Dental Clinic, we offer a variety of tooth replacement options to restore your smile, self-esteem and the function of your bite.

Why might I lose a tooth?

Most of the time, tooth loss is a result of gum disease. If you see redness, swelling, or feel discomfort in your gums, book a dental exam and cleaning because gum disease if caught in the early stages is reversible. Other gum disease symptoms include bleeding during normal brushing and flossing or persistent bad breath.

Tooth loss can also occur during a traumatic injury or an untreated infection of the soft tissues inside your tooth.

What are the consequences of missing teeth?

  • Remaining teeth can become misaligned and drift into the gap.
  • Change in biting force.
  • Loss of jawbone at the site of the gap.
  • Adverse effect on the facial structure which can alter your features.
  • Chronic headaches due to the tooth opposite the gap not having a partner to bite against.
  • Inability to speak properly and pronounce certain words.
  • Inadequate nutrition because you can’t eat or chew your food properly.
  • Sinus expansion if your teeth are lost from the upper jaw.

What solutions are available?

Your choice for tooth replacement will mostly depend on the number of teeth missing and their position in the mouth. For cases where a single tooth is lost, your dentist may recommend a dental bridge or a dental implant.

If you have lost several of your teeth, your dentist may recommend a full or partial denture instead. Dentures are removable acrylic plates with prosthetic teeth attached.
